British retailer Tesco announced the signing of a new multi-year contract with its Sustainable Beef Group, consolidating its responsible sourcing strategy. The agreement commits an expanded group of British producers and aims to stabilize the supply of certified beef over the next five years.
British retail has been deepening its beef sourcing standards for several years, prioritizing schemes with environmental traceability and animal welfare. Tesco has positioned itself as one of the main drivers of that approach through the Sustainable Beef Group.
Renewing the commitment aims to consolidate that trend and give predictability to producers who have invested in certifications.
The new five-year contract expands the group of producers included and establishes floor price commitments linked to compliance with environmental and animal welfare standards. It also provides for technical assistance to accompany the transition of medium and small establishments.
According to the company, the agreement covers approximately one third of the fresh beef volume that Tesco sells in the UK.
The deal reinforces the integration model between retail and primary production and could become a reference for other European chains. For British producers, it offers a more predictable horizon and reduces income volatility.
On the competitive front, the scheme could pressure suppliers that do not meet the required standards, accelerating consolidation of the UK herd.
