ICA is supporting the Asoapiagrov association in Versalles, El Dovio and La Unión to implement Good Beekeeping Practices and certify apiaries: of 13 registered, two are already certified. There are 47 registered beekeeping producers in Valle del Cauca.
Valle del Cauca, November 5, 2026. The Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) is carrying out follow-up visits and providing technical support to producers of the Asoapiagrov association, in the municipalities of Versalles, El Dovio and La Unión, Valle del Cauca, in order to advance the implementation of Good Beekeeping Practices (BPAP) and the certification of their apiaries.
These actions are carried out through the Institute's Animal Health Extension strategy, under the premise "Prevention is Health", which promotes the adoption of measures to prevent health risks and improve production conditions through direct support to rural communities.
Currently, the association has 12 producers and 13 registered apiaries. Of these, two have already obtained certification in Good Beekeeping Practices and the rest are in the implementation process, with the support of the Institute's professionals.
Good Beekeeping Practices are essential to guarantee that honey and the other products of the hive are obtained under hygienic, safe and traceable conditions. Their implementation helps protect consumer health, improve product quality, build trust in markets and promote sustainable production systems. Likewise, the care of bees and their environment favors pollination, a process essential for food production and the balance of ecosystems.
Oscar Darío Buitrago, in charge of the beekeeping and food safety project, indicates that "in Valle del Cauca, ICA has 47 beekeeping producers registered and is carrying out awareness-raising actions to publicize the technical support services available to this sector. As part of this work, professionals from the beekeeping, food safety and extension projects make between two and three visits per month to producers, in order to follow up on their processes and guide the adoption of practices that contribute to the development of this activity".
These actions are framed within ICA Resolution No. 00019650 of October 5, 2022, which establishes the requirements for the registration of holdings destined for production with Apis mellifera and native stingless bees, as well as for the registration of beekeepers and breeders of the latter; and in ICA Resolution No. 00008390 of July 12, 2023, which defines the requirements and the procedure to obtain certification in Good Beekeeping Practices on holdings dedicated to the production of Apis mellifera.
With these visits, ICA reaffirms its commitment to agricultural health, food safety and the strengthening of rural production, through coordinated work with the country's associations and producers.
