Fermented lamb protein proven safe in dog food

A team of researchers has analyzed the safety of fermented lamb protein Saccharomyces cerevisiae for use in food for older dogs.

In this regard, a study involving Hill's Pet Nutrition researchers focused on the safety and digestibility of foods containing a test ingredient, fermented lamb protein ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae expressing a lamb protein), at inclusion levels of 0% (control), 15%, 30% or 40% that were evaluated for 182 days in 40 dogs.

'No significant differences were observed in body weight, body condition score, body composition, physical examination, food intake or urinary parameters between groups. Biochemical, hematological and serum parameters were within reference ranges and were largely similar between groups,' the study's researchers said.

Chloride, cholesterol and homocysteine ​​levels were significantly lower at some time points in dogs fed the test ingredient foods compared to the control food, but all remained within the reference ranges.

Whole blood taurine levels did not indicate deficiency. Alanine aminotransferase levels were above the normal range on day 177 in dogs in the control and 15% test ingredient groups.

On the other hand, fecal score decreased slightly in dogs fed foods with 30% or 40% test ingredient, and fecal pH decreased in dogs fed either test ingredient diet.

'The digestibility of most parameters was similar between foods, but the apparent digestibility of fat was significantly lower in foods with the test ingredient. Overall, these results indicate that the test ingredient is safe for use in dog food ,' the research experts conclude.
