Company in Salto fined for dumping agrochemical drums, with the fine going to an agricultural school

In Gahan, Salto, a company was identified by security cameras after discarding agrochemical drums in a green space. It will receive a fine of 1.5 million pesos earmarked for the Gahan Agricultural School to buy posts and refurbish its gymnasium.

How was the company that discarded the agrochemical containers identified, and what improvements will the fine fund at the Gahan Agricultural School?

In Gahan, a town in the Salto district of northern Buenos Aires province, a company was identified through security cameras as responsible for discarding several agrochemical drums in a green space in the town, when regulations require them to be sent to a Temporary Storage Center (CAT). The incident adds another case to a long list showing that not everyone complies with proper management of these containers.

The General Secretary of Government of Salto, Camilo Alessandro, announced that the company will be fined 1.5 million pesos. "We are going to turn bad news into something good," he said through his social media accounts.

Where the fine will go

"They will be allocated purely and exclusively to the students and the educational environment of the Gahan Agricultural School," Alessandro assured. The secondary school, located at the entrance to the town on Route 31, receives students from across the region and places particular emphasis on livestock activity.

According to the institution, the funds will be used to purchase posts for building the corrals and to refurbish the gymnasium. In this way, future agricultural technicians will be able to see first-hand what it means to comply with an environmental regulation.

A recent precedent

Regarding the party responsible, the municipal secretary limited himself to stating that it was a company and said it is a practice that is not customary in the region. It is worth recalling that in March, also in Gahan, a significant episode of agrochemical container burning was recorded.

"Most producers follow good agricultural practices. We are not used to this, but when it happens the State has to be there to make a decision and condemn bad actions with responsibility," Alessandro concluded.
